Opportunity Green: Top Climate Nonprofit Spotlight (Q3 2026)

Last updated: October 2026

Giving Green classifies Opportunity Green as one of our top nonprofits for addressing climate change. We have recommended Opportunity Green since 2023.

Reducing emissions from aviation and maritime shipping is challenging because commercially available alternatives to fossil fuel propulsion are limited, and international coordination remains difficult. Philanthropic efforts have historically overlooked these sectors. Opportunity Green uses industry coalitions, direct advocacy, and legal frameworks to build more favorable policies, financial systems, and markets for low-carbon technologies. The organization focuses on solutions with substantial climate mitigation impact, while also seeking avenues that deliver environmental justice co-benefits.

We see Opportunity Green as a strategic organization with broad expertise across multiple pathways of influence to reduce emissions from aviation and shipping. We have seen signs of its influence across the private sector, the EU, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). We are especially excited about Opportunity Green’s efforts to elevate climate-vulnerable countries in international policy discussions, as we think these efforts could improve the inclusivity and ambition of these processes.

Opportunity Green is a young organization and could benefit from additional funding to build staffing capacity across its aviation and shipping programs in preparation for upcoming EU, IMO, and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) policy windows. It would also expand its emerging workstreams in high-impact areas such as addressing emissions from steel manufacturing, data centers, and agriculture.

What Is Opportunity Green?

Opportunity Green is a U.K.-based nonprofit organization using legal, policy, and economic frameworks to advance climate action. It also has an EU policy office in Brussels. It primarily focuses on reducing emissions from aviation and maritime shipping, with growing workstreams tackling emissions from steel and agriculture.

How Could Opportunity Green Help Address Climate Change?

Opportunity Green's core focus is reducing emissions from aviation and maritime shipping. It does this by influencing international and EU regulations and stimulating climate action in the private sector. Its advocacy efforts focus on accelerating the commercialization of low-carbon fleets and fuels, as well as reducing contrail emissions from aviation. It is also exploring ways to apply its model to reduce emissions in agriculture and steel.

What Does Opportunity Green Do?

Opportunity Green’s approach to reducing aviation and maritime shipping emissions incorporates four main strategies:

  • Supporting contributions from climate-vulnerable countries in international policy discussions.
  • Advocating for ambitious policies and regulations in the EU.
  • Identifying and pursuing strategic legal action to influence policy, financial institutions, and industry.
  • Facilitating a private-sector coalition to promote clean alternative fuels.

What Is New in 2026?

In 2026, Opportunity Green doubled its presence in Brussels to deepen its engagement in EU policy. A major focus has been contrail mitigation: Opportunity Green published policy guidance and engaged with key policymakers ahead of the EU's inclusion of contrails in its proposed revision of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) in July 2026. The proposal also expands the ETS's geographic scope beyond intra-EU flights, to cover flights departing the European Economic Area (EEA) to destinations within 5,000 kilometers of Frankfurt. Complementing this work, Opportunity Green is working to build a minilateral coalition of willing countries to reduce contrail emissions. Opportunity Green also brought its first legal challenge in the steel sector, filing a complaint against ArcelorMittal.

What Would Opportunity Green Do With Your Donation?

With additional funding, Opportunity Green would increase staff capacity across its new and emerging programs. It would continue to work towards existing policy windows such as ongoing negotiations for the ETS revision and IMO’s Net Zero Framework. Opportunity Green would also expand capacity in new workstreams, such as developing a minilateral contrails treaty, and addressing emissions from steel, agriculture, and data centers.

Why Is Giving Green Excited About Opportunity Green?

We think Opportunity Green’s interdisciplinary expertise fills valuable gaps in the nonprofit advocacy ecosystem for the hard-to-abate aviation and maritime shipping sectors, which have historically been overlooked. We think Opportunity Green has a compelling and impactful theory of change that leverages multiple pathways of influence, including coalition and capacity building, policy advocacy, and legal action.

Key achievements include:

  • Forming the SASHA Coalition: an industry alliance of 27 innovative aviation and shipping companies advocating for progressive climate policy. Launched in 2023, the coalition has seen consistent engagement from key stakeholders and hosted several events with EU policymakers.
  • Successfully contributing to rulings from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and the International Court of Justice saying that, under international law, states must act to protect the climate.
  • Supporting over 20 climate-vulnerable countries through ongoing IMO negotiations, resulting in several instances of countries choosing to take stronger positions to support climate goals.
