Project InnerSpace: Top Climate Nonprofit Spotlight (Q3 2026)

Last updated: September 2026
Giving Green classifies Project InnerSpace as one of our top nonprofits for addressing climate change. We have recommended Project InnerSpace since 2023.
Geothermal energy can cut emissions by providing clean electricity and heat. Next-generation (next-gen) technologies could unlock geothermal resources in more regions, potentially meeting energy needs across Africa, China, Europe, Southeast Asia, and the U.S. Project InnerSpace aims to fast-track this transition through resource mapping (GeoMap), supporting early projects (GeoFund), linking projects with potential buyers, and educating decision-makers on supportive policy. We believe its work can help reduce financial risks and boost investor confidence, leading to more projects being built and lower costs over time.
Project InnerSpace has an ambitious plan for expanding access to geothermal energy. We think its theory of change is backed by strong evidence and addresses key barriers to commercializing next-gen geothermal. We also think it has a strong case for room for more funding.

What Is Project InnerSpace?
Launched in 2022, Project InnerSpace is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on expanding geothermal energy globally. It is based in the U.S. and works globally in the U.K., India, Indonesia, Tanzania, and other countries through in-country partners.
How Could Project InnerSpace Help Address Climate Change?
Project InnerSpace is working to fight climate change by making geothermal energy more accessible. Geothermal provides clean, reliable electricity that can run consistently, even when solar and wind power are low. It helps address climate change by providing a clean alternative to fossil fuels.
What Does Project InnerSpace Do?
Enhanced geothermal systems—a type of next-gen geothermal technology—could become cost-competitive by 2035, but limited funding and investor hesitation slow progress. To help overcome this, Project InnerSpace’s 501(c)(3) is focused on three efforts: (1) GeoMap, a global geothermal resource map that reduces exploration risk and informs policy, (2) GeoFund, which provides low- or no-interest loans for community-based pilot projects, and (3) building public and industry support through reports, events, and policy education.
What is New in 2026?
Project InnerSpace has made significant progress across its three major workstreams:
- GeoMap: Project InnerSpace completed GeoMap’s global data coverage in late 2025. It reports that nearly 5,500 entities across industry, finance, research, and government now use GeoMap.
- GeoFund: GeoFund advanced from a single pilot to an active pipeline this year. Its first project, a cold storage and fruit dehydration facility in India, should help farmers preserve quality and command better prices. Three more are in the works: a thermal-energy supply project for a poultry incubation facility in Tanzania, a feasibility study for a campus cooling project in Indonesia, and a food processing facility in India.
- Building public and industry support: Among other efforts, Project InnerSpace published three country-level Future of Geothermal reports—Indonesia, the U.K., and India—quantifying each country’s next-gen geothermal potential. With the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), it launched the Geothermal Resources Management System, a standardized framework meant to unlock reserves-based lending, insurance underwriting, and disclosure compatible with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Project InnerSpace further convened its Geothermal House at CERAWeek 2026, reaching thousands of delegates alongside leadership from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E), and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), and completed six new state-level geothermal roadmaps through the DOE-funded GEODE consortium.
What Would Project InnerSpace Do With Your Donation?
As of September 2026, Project InnerSpace expects a 2027 funding gap of about $5 million USD. It plans to spend $3 million to $5 million over the next year, focused on:
- A 12-state research, ecosystem-building, and policy education campaign
- Upgrades to its GeoMap user interface, including new AI features
- More GeoFund awards in 2027
On the policy side, it has currently secured about half of its $6 million, two-year budget (covering the last quarter of 2026 through mid-2028). Half of this funding is for its 501(c)(3)’s research and education work, while the other half is for its 501(c)(4)’s advocacy work.
Donations to Project InnerSpace fill real, near-term gaps. Without additional funding, we think Project InnerSpace would need to slow down active work in its pipeline or scale back its ambitions.
Why Is Giving Green Excited About Project InnerSpace?
Project InnerSpace focuses on quickly developing new geothermal technologies to lower costs and reach commercialization. We think it has a strong theory of change, is a recognized sector leader, and is well positioned to use additional funding effectively. It has also seized the political moment for geothermal in the U.S., capitalizing on strong federal government interest and the sector’s rare bipartisan support. Beyond the U.S., it has expanded its work by seeking out in-country partners to assess how individual countries could use next-gen geothermal, which is often excluded from standard energy modeling. We have been impressed by the number of wins and connections it has built over its short history.
