Project InnerSpace: Top Climate Nonprofit Spotlight

Giving Green classifies Project InnerSpace as one of our top nonprofits for addressing climate change. We have recommended Project InnerSpace since 2023.
Geothermal energy can cut emissions by providing clean electricity and heat. Next-generation technologies could unlock geothermal resources in more regions, potentially meeting energy needs across Africa, China, Europe, Southeast Asia, and the U.S. Project InnerSpace aims to fast-track this transition through resource mapping (GeoMap), supporting early projects, and promoting next-gen geothermal to link projects with potential buyers and encourage policy support. We believe its work can help reduce financial risks and boost investor confidence, leading to more projects being built and lower costs over time.
Project InnerSpace has an ambitious plan for expanding access to geothermal energy. We think its theory of change is backed by strong evidence and addresses key barriers to commercializing next-gen geothermal. We also think it has a strong case for room for more funding.

What Is Project InnerSpace?
Launched in 2022, Project InnerSpace is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on expanding geothermal energy globally. It is based in the U.S. with global work in the U.K., India, Indonesia, Africa, and others.
How Could Project InnerSpace Help Address Climate Change?
Project InnerSpace is working to fight climate change by making geothermal energy more accessible. Geothermal provides clean, reliable electricity that can run consistently, even when solar and wind power are low.
What Does Project InnerSpace Do?
Enhanced geothermal systems—a new type of geothermal technology—could become cost-competitive by 2035, but progress is slowed by limited funding and investor hesitation. To help overcome this, Project InnerSpace is focused on three efforts: (1) GeoMap, a global geothermal resource map that guides development and supports advocacy, (2) GeoFund, which finances early-stage projects to attract more investment, and (3) building public and industry support through reports, events, and startup mentorship.
What's New in 2025?
In 2025, Project InnerSpace leveraged support from Giving Green and other donors to spotlight the global potential of next-gen geothermal. Its GeoMap tool was central to major partnerships with the International Energy Agency and Rhodium Group, showing geothermal’s potential to meet global electricity demand and power U.S. data centers. It was also a core part of Project InnerSpace’s work with Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, which outlined potential pathways to scaling next-gen geothermal internationally.
Project InnerSpace also expanded its Future of Geothermal reports across US states (Pennsylvania and New Mexico), and said it has garnered bipartisan and industry support for each. It will also release global reports (India, Indonesia, UK) in the latter half of 2025.
Project InnerSpace also hosted its Geothermal House events—immersive art-meets-science experiences held in cities like Austin, Davos, and D.C.—reaching 4,000+ participants across political lines.
GeoMap now covers new regions like India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Project InnerSpace reports that GeoMap is actively used by thousands across industry, finance, and government.
Project InnerSpace also continued leading the US Department of Energy-funded Geothermal Energy from Oil and Gas Demonstrated Engineering (GEODE) consortium, uniting over 135 entities to transfer oil and gas expertise into geothermal. In 2025, GEODE completed a landmark 800-page gap analysis and roadmap to guide future DOE funding announcements.
What Would Project InnerSpace Do With Your Donation?
Project InnerSpace would use additional donations to cover its funding gap for 2025. It has a $11.5 million (USD) budget for 2025 and, as of October 2025, faces a funding gap of $4 million for the remainder of the year. It plans to maintain the same budget for 2026. It currently has $5 million in donor proposals pending that could be used for 2026 if it fills its 2025 budget, but otherwise has not raised any of its 2026 budget. According to Project InnerSpace, this funding gap represents the operating budget required to maintain everyday expenses.
Beyond its yearly operating budget, Project InnerSpace anticipates a multi-year funding gap for expanding the following opportunities:
- Integrating artificial intelligence into GeoMap’s global data set ($6 million): Complete and maintain GeoMap, add new data sets and artificial intelligence tools, form key partnerships, and include new techno-economic modeling to reduce project risk worldwide.
- Launching five to six GeoFund projects ($3.5 million): Cover costs to evaluate and manage community-scale geothermal projects, expand into under-resourced regions, and grow the project pipeline to support local entrepreneurship and resilience. It is targeting around $500,000 per project, in addition to staff costs. Extra donations to the GeoFund would allow Project InnerSpace to fund more projects.
- Funding additional Future of Geothermal policy reports and stakeholder engagement ($2 million): Expand geothermal strategies in the US, Africa, South America, Mexico, and Japan through expert collaboration, regional reports, workshops, feasibility studies, and policy work. Costs include hiring consultants with local credibility and expertise to work as chapter authors. The $2 million would support six to eight policy reports.
Why Is Giving Green Excited About Project InnerSpace?
Project InnerSpace focuses on quickly developing new geothermal technologies to lower costs and get them to commercialization. We think it has a strong theory of change, is a recognized leader in the sector, and is well-positioned to use additional funding effectively.
