Reducing emissions from aviation and maritime shipping is challenging due to the lack of commercially available alternatives to fossil fuel propulsion, as well as barriers to international coordination. Greening these sectors has been historically overlooked by philanthropic efforts. Opportunity Green leverages industry coalitions, direct advocacy, and legal frameworks to create more favorable policy, financial systems, and markets for low-carbon technologies. The organization focuses on solutions with a substantial climate mitigation impact, while seeking avenues that also deliver environmental justice co-benefits.
We think Opportunity Green is a strategic organization with broad expertise across multiple pathways of influence to reduce emissions from aviation and shipping. We have seen signs of its influence across the private sector, the EU, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). We are especially excited about Opportunity Green’s efforts to elevate climate-vulnerable countries in international policy discussions, as we think such efforts could improve the inclusivity and the ambition levels of these processes.
Opportunity Green is a young organization and could benefit from additional funding to build staffing capacity across its aviation and shipping programs in preparation for upcoming EU and IMO policy windows. It would also develop emerging workstreams in high-impact areas such as addressing emissions from steel manufacturing, data centers, and agriculture.
