What Is ClearPath?
Founded in 2014, ClearPath is a U.S. nonprofit that promotes global emissions reduction through U.S. innovation. It conducts policy research and education to advance clean energy, carbon removal, clean manufacturing, agricultural innovation, and U.S. leadership in deploying clean technologies. ClearPath has strong working relationships with conservative leaders and staff, and provides expert education on energy innovation issues, helping accelerate bipartisan policies for clean energy deployment.
What Are We Funding, and How Could It Help Address Climate Change?
We are funding ClearPath’s work to develop federal policies supporting clean firm power, including technologies like advanced nuclear, long-duration energy storage, carbon capture and storage, hydropower, and geothermal energy. These technologies are critical for maintaining a reliable, decarbonized grid that can meet rising electricity demand from sectors such as manufacturing, data centers, and artificial intelligence.
ClearPath’s planned work includes educating policymakers on how to attract investment in new nuclear projects while protecting consumers from cost overruns. It will also promote federal policies that make geothermal projects less risky to develop. To carry out this work, ClearPath will leverage its long-standing relationships across the energy industry and educate the public and policymakers to build bipartisan support, convene stakeholders, and provide credible analysis to accelerate policy solutions.
Giving Green’s funding will primarily support staff, research, travel, and communications to develop and accelerate federal policy proposals.
This work aligns with our vision for unleashing clean energy in the U.S., where deploying clean firm power is a key priority. In general, we believe that ClearPath’s work can help lower global emissions by driving investment in and deployment of clean firm power.
Why Do We Think ClearPath Will Use This Funding Well?
We believe ClearPath has a proven track record of translating policy expertise and stakeholder relationships into real, bipartisan progress. We also believe its strong ties with conservative clean energy leaders could be especially valuable under a Republican-led government.
Focusing specifically on ClearPath’s progress on advancing clean firm power, ClearPath’s recent accomplishments include:
- Protecting and strengthening key clean energy programs: ClearPath educated the public, including Members of Congress, on the importance of preserving funding and policy support for major nuclear programs and energy tax incentives, which resulted in continued progress in advanced nuclear development.
- Advancing U.S. leadership in clean energy exports: ClearPath informed federal reauthorization efforts for the Development Finance Corporation and the Export-Import Bank of the U.S., including publishing a comparative analysis of U.S. and Chinese global energy financing to support stronger U.S. policy.
- Supporting state-level innovation and investment: ClearPath educated state policymakers who were exploring new nuclear energy options and built strong relationships with energy leaders in states like Indiana to shape emerging policies.
- Increasing funding and support for clean energy technologies: ClearPath has educated the public and policymakers on the importance of funding and support for programs that demonstrate diverse clean energy technologies.
Giving Green believes that additional climate donations are likely to be most impactful when directed to our top nonprofits. For several reasons, we may choose to recommend grants to other organizations for work that we believe is at least as impactful as grants to our top recommendations. We are highlighting this grant to offer transparency to donors to the Giving Green Fund, as well as to provide a resource for donors who are particularly interested in this impact strategy. This is a nonpartisan analysis (study or research) and is provided for educational purposes.
