Spark Climate Solutions: Grantee Spotlight (Q3 2026)

The Giving Green Fund is awarding a restricted grant to Spark Climate Solutions (Spark) for its livestock enteric methane mitigation program, which aims to reduce methane emissions from ruminants like cattle and sheep. Spark is a U.S.-based organization that accelerates emerging, but potentially high-impact, climate mitigation strategies.

Spark’s work aligns with our philanthropic strategy of reducing enteric methane emissions. Given that reducing meat consumption would have a larger impact on food sector emissions than focusing only on enteric methane mitigation, we consider enteric methane a secondary strategy to scaling alternative proteins. However, substantial meat demand is likely to persist for the foreseeable future, and we think it is important to address these emissions. Please see Giving Green’s sector report on Food, Agriculture, and Land (FAL) emissions for more information, including risks and potential co-benefits, recommended sub-strategies, theory of change, funding need, and key uncertainties.

What Is Spark?

Spark was founded in 2022 to accelerate progress on emerging, high-impact climate mitigation strategies. It focuses on under-leveraged opportunities to reduce climate risks, such as by cutting emissions of short-lived climate pollutants. Its work spans enteric methane mitigation, methane removal research, agricultural nitrogen transformation, and warming-induced emissions (such as from permafrost thaw). Spark plays a unique role as a field builder in these neglected sectors by mobilizing resources and coordinating efforts to drive innovation. Its activities include coordinating policy advocacy efforts, mobilizing industry actors, supporting the path to market for innovative solutions, and regranting to fill research gaps.

What Are We Funding, and How Could It Help Address Climate Change?

Our grant is restricted to Spark’s enteric methane mitigation program. Specifically, Spark plans to use our grant to support innovation for pasture delivery mechanisms, develop market mechanisms to incentivize enteric methane mitigation, and support its enteric methane policy coalition:

Pasture delivery innovation: Around 70% of cattle are pasture-raised, yet current enteric methane solutions are limited to intensive feedlot or dairy operations. Spark seeks to develop a catalytic research fund to test early-stage delivery mechanisms for pasture-based cattle.

Market incentive mechanisms: After its scoping research led it to decide against building an advanced market commitment to stimulate development of enteric methane solutions, Spark plans to conduct further research to identify other potentially promising market mechanisms.

The Livestock Methane Policy Coalition (LMPC): Spark established the LMPC, the primary U.S. policy convener for enteric methane mitigation. The LMPC aims to raise the political salience of enteric methane mitigation and enact policies that could accelerate commercialization of enteric methane solutions.

Why Do We Think Spark Will Use This Funding Well?

We think Spark is well-positioned to fill gaps in the field because of its strong connections to the sector, technical expertise, and strategic approach. We have been impressed by Spark’s leadership in the nascent field of enteric methane mitigation. For example:

  • Under Spark’s leadership, the LMPC advocated for the introduction of the U.S.’s bipartisan EMIT LESS Act for enteric methane mitigation and helped to reintroduce the Innovative Feed Act into the draft Farm Bill, which would establish a faster regulatory pathway for enteric methane-mitigating feed additives.
  • Spark started and spun out an enteric methane impact alliance, now with 50 member organizations, including agribusinesses, biotech companies, investors, and NGOs.
  • Spark helped establish the program strategy for the Global Methane Hub’s $200 million USD Enteric Fermentation Accelerator.
  • Spark organizes the only annual conference dedicated to enteric methane emissions.

We publish grant spotlights to offer transparency to Giving Green Fund donors and resources for those interested in the impact strategies each grant supports. Giving Green believes our Top Climate Nonprofits have the greatest impact potential for large, unrestricted gifts. For several reasons, we also disburse and recommend grants to other organizations surfaced through our research process for work that we believe is at least as impactful as grants to our top recommendations.
